2017 North American eclipse

Preliminary data from the Millstone Hill Geospace Facility's ISR show promising early results for ionospheric changes over the continent during the 2017 eclipse. Large depletions in electron density occurred as the umbral and penumbral eclipse shadow passed along the southeastern US.

The GNSS vertical total electron content (TEC) results also show interesting eclipse effects. TEC is a measure of the total number of electrons in a vertical column above a given latitude and longitude. Clear signatures of a large reduction in electron density are also seen in this data, as the sun's extreme ultraviolet (EUV) ionizing radiation temporarily decreased during eclipse passage. Note that the effects cover almost the entire US, rather than being limited to just a narrow strip near totality, as the influence of the moon's shadow extends far beyond just the totality location.
